WHAT IS A NEUROSIS?

Pavlov was a Russian scientist who performed a now-famous experiment with dogs. He rang a bell every time he gave his dogs food and they salivated over the food.

He soon found that if he rang the bell but did not give the dogs any food they would still salivate. In other words, they had learned to salivate when they heard the bell not only when they saw the food. This is called “learned behaviour”.

When a person has acquired learned behaviour and behaves compulsively in a certain way, rather like Pavlov’s dogs, he/she is said to have a “neurosis” . . . especially when the reason for the learned behaviour has been forgotten.

This compulsive learned behaviour is often accompanied by anxiety. The anxiety could possibly be caused because the learned behaviour is irrational (appears to have no reason for it) . . . and the person is frightened of being so helpless and unable to prevent it occurring, . . . and also because of the social embarrassment this compulsive behaviour, and helplessness, causes him/her.
