Escape the Gay Straitjacket

Dear Mr Black, |
I first saw your book at my library on the new titles shelf over a year ago . . . when, needless to say, I was attracted by the gorgeous cover! I borrowed it . . . and renewed . . . and renewed . . . and renewed it! ( I was too poor at the time to buy it!) I decided finally it was too important, and I referred to it too much, not to own a copy, so I bought it. Thankyou . . . . The insight your book has given me into my own sexuality - and into understanding the goings-on in the minds of the men I meet, and why relationships have gone wrong, has been priceless. I have only recently come out myself at 43, and I am certain that reading your book was instrumental in my being able to do so. It has answered so many questions. And what's more, I have recently qualified as a therapist, and want to specialise in reaching the gay community - your book fills in many gaps and ties in perfectly with other bits of (usually incomplete) theory about what makes us gay and how we operate, which will enable me to be of greatest help to gay men. I have lost count now of the number of times I have either referred to it or actually re-read it. It should be up there with John Gray's "Mars and Venus". Thankyou! Most sincerely, John Martin Faulkner, NorfolkEarthshaking! . . . really made me think differently and I highly recommend (it). Gays are wimpy pussy boys . . . even those who don't dress like women -- still act like them . . . Is it intrinsic to homosexuality? Donald Black argues it's not. Instead, it's an immense tragedy the gay community has not addressed. To show that wimpiness is not intrinsic to homosexuality, Black points to the little-known fact that not all gay men are sissies. Only 90% are. The other 10% have no feminine tendencies (at any point in their lives). Every time you see a wimpy gay man or drag queen, there's probably a lion inside afraid to get out of its cage. Mike Orr, Seattle (FULL REVIEW)Thank you for your book. And thank you for your life. R.F., HoustonI'm enjoying "Escaping the Gay Straitjacket" received this week. It's quite a good read and full of insight. R.W., SacramentoA "Must Read" for today's unhappily liberated gay male.As a wrestler and fan of Mr. Black's first 'cult' book, I found this latest book more readable for the general population who do not relate to the imagery of combat. As someone who was lucky enough to have escaped the 'Gay Straitjacket' at an early age in spite of all of the odds, I heartily endorse Mr. Black's analysis. He has correctly identified repressed anger as the cause of social isolation, victimization, and subsequent self-destructive behaviors. As a former high-school teacher and coach of 15 years, I have often observed this self-destructive syndrome in young boys. Society has not only decided 'assertive masculinity' is not to be tolerated, worse, it is to be treated as a psychosis (i.e. 'testosterone poisoning'). The only drawback is that Mr. Black focuses narrowly on the 'Gay Straitjacket', when the 'Straitjacket' is far more universal in young males regardless of sexual orientation. I am reminded of Christina Hoff Sommer's 'The War Against Boys'. The politically-correct obsession of today's intellectual elite to deny the evolutionary biology of young males, is causing more problems than it is solving. We now drug our young boys with Ritalin when we are unhappy with their normal aggressive behavior. I escaped the 'Straitjacket' because there was no Ritalin in the '50s. Boys are dropping out of school, committing suicide, and filling up the prisons at astonishing rates in today's more affluent society. Something is radically wrong, and Mr. Black is clearly on to something. EuGene A Dermody Jr., San Francisco, CA
